The cutouts were assembled as follows: a normal silhouette was formed by averaging a number of side views of well proportioned dogs. Then 2 longer and two shorter versions were made, removing and adding a constant amount of length. This gave 5 body length silhouettes, very short, short, average, long and very long.  A constant amount of leg or neck was added to and subtracted from each of the 5 silhouettes, giving subcategories of short neck, normal neck, and long neck and short legs, normal legs, and long legs.

When you compare your scoring of the length of each dog against the key, you will learn a lot about the role of illusion in the perception of body length.

If you are a person with normal vision, the dog with the short neck appears shorter bodied than the dog with a longer neck.  This is because the eye measures the length of the upper curve from the nose to the end of the dog.   The visual impression of a dog with a long neck is that of a long dog.
